Real Experience
Here are some examples of what kept our 2011 summer students busy:
- Azim Remani (Toronto)
I worked closely with a partner and an associate on two securities matters. I became familiar with the details of various financing transactions and had opportunities to work directly with clients and counsel for the other parties on the transactions. - Stephanie Voudouris (Osgoode)
I worked on a share purchase transaction. I participated in discussions with the lawyers about the issues informing the deal and I really saw how my contribution fit into the bigger picture of the file. - Carly Cohen (Western)
I was asked to do searches on possible slogans for a high-end clothing store fall 2012 campaign. I investigated whether any of the proposed slogans would infringe on any other trademarks and what their uses were in Canada. I will see one of the slogans being used this fall! - Chris Selby (Western)
I wrote a comprehensive memo that was given directly to the CEO of a client. I would never have imagined that I would be given this much responsibility, this early! - Alec Milne (Toronto)
I got the chance to observe a senior litigator participate in two cross-examinations, The litigator took care to inform me on points of strategy and procedure throughout the process. - Jessica Braude (Osgoode)
The best part about my summer has been having the opportunity to attend two discoveries, one cross examination, three client meetings, one settlement conference and two hearings - now that is what I call hands on work. - Jeremy Bornstein (Western)
One of the most interesting files I worked on this summer was a bankruptcy and insolvency litigation matter. I wrote a substantial part of the factum that was used to argue before the court. Several of my arguments formed the basis of the judge’s questions to opposing counsel. - Anita Kim (Dalhousie)
When I first found out I was working with Len Glickman on a paper on product placement for my summer project I was pretty happy. Len was one of the lawyers I knew I wanted to work with this summer. After a busy first month here, not only did I learn a lot about product placement and the entertainment industry, but I am also listed as a co-author of the paper and had to sign a release form for publication! - Steven Pulver (Western)
I helped draft a memo, factum and book of authorities for a motion at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. Not only did I get to attend the motion, a few of the cases I dug up for the memo ended up in the judge’s decision! - Caitlin Russell (Queen's)
Working on a private placement offering for a mining company gave me my first taste of securities law. After a few weeks on the file I was relied on for knowledge about the company and drafted various documents for the closing. - Monique Emdon (Windosr)
This summer, I was solely responsible for filing a small claims defence. Although I had supervision, I was the main client contact and made sure all the filing requirements were met. It was great to feel I could provide a direct service to a client even at this early stage of my legal career.
